How Cooldown works

Cooldown puts one night between you and the buy button.

You choose the shopping apps and websites that get you. From then on, opening one does not take you straight to the checkout — Cooldown steps in first with a quiet screen that says Sleep on it. You can note the thing down, walk away, or open the shop anyway for a few minutes. Nothing is ever bought or cancelled on your behalf.

Anything you note down waits twenty-four hours. When the wait is over Cooldown asks one question: do you still want it? Most wants don't survive the night — and the ones that do were real.

  • ProtectionOne switch. While it is on, the shops you chose show Cooldown's shield instead of opening — the app and the website, including in Safari.
  • CaptureName the thing, tap a price, tap how you feel — bored, stressed, celebrating, deal FOMO, or “I need it”. Fifteen seconds, one screen, no keyboard gymnastics.
  • On iceCaptured items wait under a slow twenty-four-hour ring. Nothing is bought while an item cools.
  • Estimated savingsEvery item you let go counts toward a running total, built entirely from prices you typed yourself.
  • Danger hours and rulesMake late nights a little stricter, or close one shop's door entirely between certain hours. The rule lifts on its own.
  • Strict modeHold your own setup in place so it can't be undone in the moment you would most like to undo it.
  • WidgetsThis month's estimated savings and what's on ice, on the Home Screen and the Lock Screen, with a Live Activity while an item cools.

Requirements

DeviceiPhone running iOS 17 or newer. Cooldown is designed for iPhone.
PermissionScreen Time access, granted once during setup through Apple's own prompt. Cooldown uses Apple's Screen Time framework — the same system behind iOS's built-in app limits — and Apple, not Cooldown, is what actually stands in front of a shop.
AccountNone. There is no sign-up, no email field and no password anywhere in the app.
InternetNot needed. Every shield, capture, timer and total works offline. The only network traffic is Apple's when you buy or restore Premium — and the optional AI reflection, if you switch it on.
NotificationsOptional, and generated on the phone. Cooldown uses them to hand you from the shield into the capture screen, and to tell you when an item's cooldown is over.

Getting started

Setup is a handful of screens and ends with protection already on.

  1. Allow Screen Time access when Apple asks. Cooldown cannot work without it, and you can withdraw it any time in Settings → Screen Time.
  2. Pick your shops in Apple's picker, and add the websites you want shielded. Cooldown never learns their names — see Privacy.
  3. Set danger hours if you want them — the hours when shopping goes badly for you. Optional, and changeable later.
  4. Done. Open one of your shops and meet the shield.
The first shield can feel abrupt. That is the moment the app exists for — tap Something caught my eye and take fifteen seconds.

About the savings number

Every price in Cooldown is one you typed yourself, and every figure the app shows is labelled estimated. That is not a disclaimer bolted on afterwards — it is the whole design.

  • Cooldown does not connect to your bank, read your purchase history, or check what anything actually costs.
  • An item counts toward the total once, when you let it go after cooling down.
  • Items you keep never touch the total, and keeping something is not treated as a failure anywhere in the app.
The number is a record of what you decided not to buy, at the prices you guessed. It is a good number to be proud of and a bad number to put in a spreadsheet.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cooldown free?
Yes, and free is a working product rather than a demo: one shopping app and one website shielded, the full twenty-four-hour cooldown list, and your estimated savings.
What does Premium add?
Every shop and website you want to shield, cooldown lengths of 12, 24, 48 or 72 hours, danger-hour and per-shop rules, strict mode, how purchases felt afterwards, widgets, and the optional reflection. Premium is a monthly or yearly subscription — the yearly plan starts with a free trial — or a single lifetime purchase. Prices are shown in the app for your country, and billing is handled by Apple.
Does it block me from buying things?
No. Every shield has a way through: I need to shop now opens the shop for a few minutes. Cooldown is a shield, not a wall — it asks you to notice, and then it gets out of the way.
What happens if my subscription lapses?
Nothing you built is taken away. Your history and your savings total stay, and the shops you already chose stay shielded. Only the ability to add more Premium content closes.
Can I restore a purchase on a new phone?
Yes. Open the Premium screen and tap Restore purchases. Premium belongs to your Apple ID, not to the phone.
Why can't Cooldown tell me which shops I protected?
Because it genuinely does not know. Apple's Screen Time hands Cooldown opaque tokens that are meaningless outside your phone — no app names, no identifiers. Cooldown can ask iOS to shield them; it cannot read them.
Does it shield websites, or only apps?
Both. A shielded shop is shielded in its app and on its website in Safari.
I can't turn protection off. Is something broken?
Check whether strict mode is running — the home screen says so. While it runs, your setup is held in place by design. It ends on its own at the time you chose.
Does Cooldown see what I buy?
No. It has no access to your bank, your orders, your browsing or your card. It records only its own events — that a shield was shown, and what you chose — and keeps those on your phone.
What is the AI reflection, and is it on?
It is one short question before the choices, and a few sentences about your week on Sundays. It is off until you turn it on. When it is on, it is the only thing in the app that sends anything off the phone, and the Privacy Policy lists exactly what.
Does it work on iPad or Mac?
Cooldown is built for iPhone. It is not offered on other devices.

Troubleshooting

A shop opens without a shield

  • Check the Protection switch on the home screen.
  • Check that Screen Time access is still granted: Settings → Screen Time → Apps with Screen Time access. If it was withdrawn, Cooldown shows a recovery screen with a button to ask again.
  • A shopping window you opened earlier may still be running. It closes on its own, and the shield comes back.
  • If the shop is covered only by a rule, the shield appears only during that rule's hours.

The shield appears but the capture screen never opens

  • Tapping Something caught my eye hands you to Cooldown through a notification. If notifications are off, iOS cannot deliver the hand-off — turn them on in Settings → Notifications → Cooldown.
  • Opening Cooldown directly also opens the waiting capture.

A website isn't shielded

Websites are shielded by domain. Make sure the domain you added matches the one you actually open, and note that a shop's app and its website are two separate things to add.

Widgets are behind

iOS refreshes widgets on its own schedule. Opening Cooldown brings them up to date immediately.

Premium isn't recognised

Tap Restore purchases on the Premium screen, and make sure the phone is signed into the same Apple ID that made the purchase. Refunds and billing questions are handled by Apple through Apple Support.
